Weird Niche: Dog ID Tag Silencers

It's Weird Niche Wednesday time again, my friends. (Cue applause.)

What is our weird niche this time? Well, it's not quite as weird as some we've had in the past like Edible Insects or Pet Wigs

So, I hope you won't be disappointed that it's not weird enough. 🙂

But, this niche is such a clever one and solved a big problem for me, so I thought it worthy of Weird Niche Wednesday.

You see, I have two dogs – Einstein and Eddy. And, I love them very much. They are both goofy as can be and are total opposites.

Here's my Einstein trying to learn chess when he was a puppy:

I would show you a picture of Eddy but he's afraid of cameras. Go figure.

So, as I was saying, they are complete opposites.

Eddy is afraid of the water, but Einstein LIVES to swim in the pool. The only bad part is that he gets dry skin from the pool chemicals. So starting around March when the pool gets warm enough that he can get in (and I can handle the cold water he shakes off on me), he gets itchy from the chlorine.

So, he scratches. And, he scratches. And, he scratches.

Which isn't a huge issue, and we do treat it. But, it DOES become an issue from about midnight til 6 in the morning when I'm trying to sleep and I can hear his tags.

click, clink, click…

click, clink, click…

click, clink, click…

click, clink, click…

click, clink, click…

click, clink, click…

click, clink, click…

click, clink, click…

Now, I'm a very very patient person, but sleep deprivation is an ugly thing. Ask anyone who's ever had a baby, and you know that there gets a point in your sleep deprivation where you question your sanity and then you go past that and you decide you don't really care whether you're sane or not, as long as you can just get a solid 3 hours of sleep. Then you start to think that going crazy might be nice because you'd be able to sleep in the hospital. (oops. Is that TMI?) 🙂

I figured, as any rationale person, that there had to be a solution to this problem at the pet store. I couldn't be the only person who had an itchy pet that wore id tags, right?

So, I looked. And, I looked. And, I looked some more. No luck.

Then, finally, I found it:

It's nothing more than a little pocket of waterproof material with long velcro straps. But, I would have easily paid $30 for it!

I bought it back in June and I love my stupid little dog tag pocket thingie. God Bless the folks at Quiet Spot for their brilliance.

Updated to Add:

Here's Einie in his dog tag silencer. He's bigger now. 🙂

So, what are the business lessons today?

Business Lessons Learn from the Dog Tag Silencer Niche:

  1. Find a problem that people have and offer a solution and they'll pay for it!
I gladly paid for it. Heck, if that thing wears out, I'll buy several more – just to make sure I've got some on hand. I do love my puppies, but I also love my sleep.
  2. The pet industry is one of the biggest ones out there.
If you love animals, then don't go into the “make money online” niche or the golf niche just because you think you should. People spend money on their pets. LOTS of it.
  3. Don't overcomplicate things.
These people sewed up a simple piece of fabric with velcro on it. If you have an idea for solving a problem, don't overthink it. Just DO it. You can help people. The people at Quiet Spot have.

My solution was remove collars from dogs because Penny Lane will chew through her collar if the tags are dangling there (whether or not they clink) she’s a crazy dog! She has chewed through even the toughest collars, including one that was supposed to be chew proof :-p

I love this! Although I have to say that it reminds me of my son. LOL!

Let me explain. He spent 10 years in the Army, (he would have made a career but developed diabetes, so had to be medically discharged) anyway, as you may know they have dog tags that they have to wear constantly. Believe it or not they have dog tag silencers.

They are rubber rings that fit around their dog tags so that, (Dah), their dog tags don’t rattle. It just made me chuckle when I saw this niche.

My lab, Charlie, had a very bad case of fleas this spring. Wish I would have had the puppy kind of dog tag silencers. Thankfully, we were able to get them under control and gone before I started looking for a padded room. 🙂

    Ahoy Nicole,

Tiki lives on the sailboat with us. He is about 10 pounds with two tags on his collar. Yes the clicking at night is annoying.

One, I take his collar off when I go to bed. Again, he is little, and his collar has one of those plastic squeeze clasps. So it is easy to remove.

Second, on the back tag I stuck one of those round stickum felt pads. The front tag lays against the felt. Cost, a few pennies.

Here is a quick pic I just took.

      Smartie pants! 🙂 Love it!

I would take off his collar but he gets up at 4 am to pee and if he got out I’d feel awful. Plus, he likes to wrestle taking the collar off and on. And, considering he’s 80 lbs – I’d rather just avoid it. lol!

I agree. All of the good niches aren’t taken. In fact, I thought of one today when the Polaris got stuck under our ladder in our pool – AGAIN.

Anyone want to invent something that hooks onto a pool ladder to prevent a Polaris from getting stuck in there and spraying water out of the pool?

      Pretty please?

This is great, we have two labs and they run around and swim in our pond like crazy. We have been concerned with the noise of the tags actually bothering their ears. We tried a rubber band around the tags and this worked great, until it came off and our dog got it stuck around her tooth! These dog tag silencers seem like a great idea!

    thanks for sharing.

Glad to help! There are other kinds that are plastic rings, but I preferred this solution. And, it’s lasted several months on a very active dog so far so I’m a happy camper!

      Thanks for commenting.

Thanks Nicole, this made me giggle. It does bring up a great point. I’m going to link this post to the post I did today, it confirms what I said, that the opportunities online are limitless no matter what your background or experience. If I can do this anyone can.

I wanted to thank you for referring your mother to my blog. I’m honored you entrusted your sweet momma to me, I know how close you two are!

It seems so simple, yet the idea can just escape us, yes?

Oh, I have to laugh. Look closely at the package for the tag. “Stylish” lmao! Einstein is stylin’!

    Love ya!
