Online Safety Reminder

Hey guys. I was reading Lynn Terry’s blog today and came across this post entitled “Don’t Publish your Physical Address” and I felt it was important to share with you.
The story is this. Lynn actually had a reader of hers stop by her home to talk with her since she hadn’t returned the person’s email or phone call (after 24 hour’s time). This was someone who found her online and they had never spoken before. Not cool (to say the least).
Please, please, if you’re doing business online and have an ezine or ecourse or mailing list (and are required by the SPAM law to include an address) — get a PO Box. Or, stop by the UPS Store or Mailboxes,etc, if you’d prefer an address that “looks” like a real address.
Sure, the person can “seem” nice enough, but most dangerous people do. This may have been a very nice man, but, it’s just better to be safe.
So, my dear readers. Please protect yourself.

Yikes! I do think about that frequently.. especially for our familiy blog where I show pictures and mention the name of our town periodically. I do have a P.O. Box for my mailing list and I don’t think I have ever published my home adress online… Even just having the town name out there scares me.

Yes I remember reading this on Lynn’s blog a while ago, scary! You know another thing to think of is on domain registrations.
I had my webhost (the same one you love Nik) register my domains and they actually have my home address on them, you’ve just reminded to send me and email and see if I can have them removed because it’s easy enough for someone to look up my domain name and then my home address on whois.
I have a P.O.Box number for mail so on everything else I just use that for sure.

Hi Angela,
All domain registrars publish the whois info unless you choose “private registration” which is what I do. It costs a little extra, but it’s well worth it to me just to avoid the spam and phone calls I used to get.
So, you’ll either want to update that with your business address/PO Box or go the private registration route. (All of my domains should say “Domains by Proxy” when you check them in the whois.net databases.)
